Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which is located behind the iris and pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. A healthy lens is clear and allows light to pass through easily. When a cataract develops, the lens becomes cloudy, making it harder for light to reach the retina and causing vision to become blurry and dim. Cataracts typically develop slowly.  They are the most common cause of reversible vision loss and eventually affect alsmot everyone.

Symptoms

The symptoms of cataracts can vary, but some of the most common include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision: This is often described as seeing through a foggy window.
  • Faded colors: Colors may appear dull or yellowish.
  • Poor night vision: Driving at night may become especially difficult due to glare from headlights.
  • Halos around lights: You might see bright rings surrounding light sources.
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription: Your vision may change rapidly, requiring new lenses more often.
  • Double vision in one eye.

As cataracts progress, they can significantly impact a person's daily life. Difficulty reading, driving, recognizing faces, and performing simple tasks can lead to a loss of independence and a decreased quality of life. Left untreated, a severe cataract can eventually lead to blindness.

Treatment

The only effective treatment for a cataract is surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful operations performed today.

The procedure involves a surgeon removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). This is an outpatient procedure that, in most cases, takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Recovery is usually quick, with most people noticing improved vision within a few days.

In addition to removing the cloudy lens, cataract surgery offers a unique opportunity to replace it with an artificial lens (IOL) tailored to your individual visual needs.  There are numerous options to choose from to optimize your vision for your lifestyle.
