Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a significant advancement in cataract surgery, offering a new level of customization for vision correction. Unlike traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are selected before surgery and cannot be changed afterward, the LAL allows your doctor to precisely adjust your vision after the lens has been implanted and your eye has healed.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The LAL is a high-technology, three-piece silicone IOL used to replace the eye's natural lens during cataract surgery. The unique feature of the LAL is that it is made of a proprietary photo-sensitive material. This material reacts to a specific, low-level UV light source, allowing its shape and power to be modified non-invasively in the weeks following the initial surgery.

How Does the LAL Work?

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

The process involves two main stages:

1. Cataract Surgery

First, the LAL is implanted in your eye during standard cataract surgery. Following the surgery, a recovery period of approximately two to three weeks is required for the eye to heal and stabilize. During this time, the lens's power is temporarily fixed.

2. Light Treatment (Adjustment)

Once your eye has stabilized, you will undergo a series of in-office light treatment procedures. During these procedures, your doctor will use a specialized Light Delivery Device (LDD) to shine a precise pattern of UV light onto the lens. This light alters the lens's curvature, which changes its power and fine-tunes your vision.

The adjustments are typically made over a period of about two to four sessions, and your doctor will work with you to achieve your desired vision outcome. Once the target vision is reached, a final light treatment, called "lock-in," is performed. This process permanently stabilizes the lens power, ensuring your new vision correction remains fixed.

Potential Benefits of the LAL

The primary advantage of the Light Adjustable Lens is the ability to customize your vision post-surgery, which offers several potential benefits:

  • Improved Accuracy: The ability to adjust the lens power after the eye has completely healed can lead to more precise visual outcomes compared to fixed-power IOLs. This can reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses following surgery.
  • Personalized Vision: It allows for tailoring the vision correction to your specific lifestyle needs, such as optimizing for reading, intermediate work, or distance vision.
  • Reduced Risk of Enhancement Procedures: By fine-tuning the vision non-invasively, the need for secondary procedures, such as laser enhancements, may be reduced.
  • Treatment of Astigmatism: The LAL can be adjusted to correct for pre-existing or residual astigmatism.
