YAG Capsulotomy

YAG Laser Capsulotomy: Restoring Clarity After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful operations performed today, offering millions of people a return to clear vision. However, for a small percentage of patients, vision may become cloudy again months or even years after the initial procedure. This condition is known as Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), sometimes referred to as a "secondary cataract." The good news is that PCO is easily and effectively treated with a simple, non-invasive procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy.

What is YAG Laser Capsulotomy?

During cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This IOL is held in place by the lens capsule, a thin membrane. PCO occurs when cells grow on the back (posterior) of this capsule, causing cloudiness that impairs vision.

A YAG laser capsulotomy is an outpatient procedure that uses a specialized laser to create a small, clear opening in the center of the cloudy posterior capsule. This allows light to pass through to the retina, instantly restoring clear vision. The procedure is quick, typically taking only a few minutes. You will be seated at a machine similar to the one used for eye exams, and a special contact lens may be placed on your eye to focus the laser. The procedure is painless, although you may hear a faint clicking sound.

Benefits of the Procedure

The primary benefit of a YAG laser capsulotomy is the swift and significant improvement in vision. Patients often notice:

  • Elimination of cloudy or hazy vision.
  • Reduction in glare and halo effects.
  • Improved color perception.

Since the procedure is non-surgical, it requires no incisions, stitches, or hospital stay. Recovery is immediate, and most patients can resume normal activities the same day.

Risks and What to Expect

YAG laser capsulotomy is performed in the clinic and is similar to a normal office visit.  While the procedure is very safe, it is important to be aware of some minor risks, which are rare:

  • Temporary Increase in Eye Pressure: This is usually managed with eye drops immediately following the procedure.
  • Inflammation: Mild inflammation may occur but is typically treated with anti-inflammatory drops.
  • Retinal Detachment: An extremely rare but serious complication.

What to Expect During Recovery

Immediately after the procedure, your vision may be temporarily blurry due to the eye drops used to dilate your pupil, or from slight inflammation. Your doctor will likely check your eye pressure shortly after the treatment.

For post-procedure care, you may be prescribed anti-inflammatory eye drops to use for a few days. The visual clarity often returns within hours, and the improvement is permanent. A follow up exam is usually scheduled a couple weeks after the procedure.  If you have any concerns or experience a sudden decrease in vision, please contact your eye doctor immediately.
